Can roots get stained?

This is not root rot. I just dumped my res. And redid everything. Using hydro guard for 3 gallons. The roots will just not grow. I removed all media to check roots. All roots above water are very white???? Help. I'm having to ph down and its growing quickly. Should I leave it alone?
