How to Count Cards in Blackjack — and actually get good at it
The Hi-Lo system, betting strategy, and a free browser trainer to practise until it's second nature.
Hollywood makes card counting look like a superpower reserved for MIT geniuses. It isn't. It's a learnable skill — and with the right system and a bit of practice, anyone can do it. This guide covers everything: the history, the Hi-Lo system, how to bet with the count, and how to use our free interactive trainer to drill it until it's automatic.
Card counting is a strategy used in blackjack to track whether the remaining cards in the deck are favourable to the player or the dealer. It doesn't involve memorising every card dealt — just keeping a running mental tally as play unfolds.
The concept was formalised in 1962 by mathematician Edward Thorp, who published Beat the Dealer — the first book to prove blackjack could be beaten with basic strategy and card counting. Casinos scrambled. Rules changed. And counting became the most talked-about advantage play technique in gambling history.
There are dozens of counting systems. Hi-Lo is the most popular — balanced, beginner-friendly, and powerful enough to give you a real edge. Every card gets a value of +1, 0, or −1. You just keep a running total in your head as each card hits the table.
| Count | Cards | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| +1 | 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 | Low card left the deck — slightly better for you |
| 0 | 7, 8, 9 | Neutral — no change |
| −1 | 10, J, Q, K, A | High card left the deck — slightly worse for you |
A positive running count means more high cards are left in the shoe. High cards mean more blackjacks (which pay 3:2), more dealer busts, and more successful doubles and splits. That's your moment to bet big.
In a multi-deck game you also calculate the true count — divide your running count by the number of decks remaining. This normalises the count across different shoe sizes and tells you exactly how strong your edge is.

Counting is useless if you don't vary your bets. The whole point is to bet small when the house has the edge and bet big when you do. Here's a simple guide based on the true count:
Most counters use a 1-to-8 betting spread — for example £10 minimum up to £80 when the count is high. The bigger the spread, the bigger the potential edge — but also the more attention you attract from the pit.
Online blackjack with continuous shuffling machines (CSMs) makes counting effectively impossible — the deck reshuffles after every hand. For counting to work you need a physical shoe. Live dealer games online can work if the shoe isn't cut too shallow.
